May 2018 News Letter
Growing up I was often referred to as scrappy by my schoolmates and family. I was a fighter and did what I could to excel at those things that I deemed important (my mom would tell you those were not always the things I should have fought for). We are all faced with challenges in our respective jobs and personal lives. Some obstacles that are placed before us seem insurmountable when we look at them head on. But we all are blessed with the ability to make our own choices and choose how to react to those obstacles. I like the Urban Dictionary definition for scrappy, “Someone or something that appears dwarfed by a challenge, but more than compensates for seeming inadequacies through will, persistence and heart.” If you want something, exercising the will, persistence, and heart can help you accomplish it. As applied to Fleetwood it is my hope that everyone is striving for the success of our company, drivers, owners, customers, and associates. Be scrappy when faced with work challenges. It will pay off, I am here to help if it is needed.
In memory of Paul Hadnot
It is with a heavy heart we say goodbye to a great man and valuable member of the Fleetwood family. Paul had been with Fleetwood as an Owner operator for 18 years. He was among the best in the chip hauling business in many ways. Not only was his performance top notch but he was the type of gentlemen that always help contribute to solution rather than contribute to the problem. You could always count on Paul to help get the job done and he did it with a smile. Pineland Supervisor Gerald Adaway said, “…he was always on time on the job and eager to get the job done!... He was always ready to help when times were tough!” Paul will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Changing Season and the Hazards at hand
Every season and holiday bring on a different set of hazards. I want to highlight some of these to enhance our opportunities to avoid incidents.
The weeks ahead include Memorial Day, and July 4th, these holidays have historically been heavy traffic holidays. Not only does the density of traffic increase, but the number of drivers under the influence of alcohol/drugs is higher during major holidays as well. If drivers must operate equipment on the highways during this time be sure to exercise caution, adjust following distance, speed for conditions and increased focus on surroundings to avoid accident or incident.
Not only for the holidays above, the summer months are accompanied by large volumes of towed vehicles and recreational vehicles. Many of the drivers you will be sharing the road with are used to driving only a few miles a week. This could lead to fatigue, distraction, and lack of awareness. Vacationers are prone to get distracted by scenery, tourist attractions, etc. and make unexpected lane changes, hard brakes and turns as a result.
Many of the towed vehicles are operated by drivers whom are unaccustomed to articulated vehicles, add length and amount of distance needed for lane changes. As a professional driver, one must make allowances for these. Expect them to make mistakes and be prepared to reduce speed or take evasive action to lessen our chance of involvement.
While exposure is increased, I feel our fleet has the experience and professionalism to stay accident free.
Thanks to all you for your part in keeping our highways safe!!
